KHSAA Votes To Separate Postseason Competition

KHSAA Votes To Separate Postseason Competition

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A controversial proposal to separate the state's public and private high schools for purposes of postseason competition has been approved. It passed today at the annual delegate assembly of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. Delegates voted 195-78, with two abstentions, to enact the measure. It needed 184 votes.

Proponents say the measure will address competitive inequities caused by the fact that private schools can bring in students without consideration of geographic boundaries. Opponents argue that private schools are being unfairly targeted because of misinformation and unproven rumors of recruiting. The new rule affects high school athletics in Kentucky, particularly the Sweet 16 basketball tournaments, which would no longer be for all comers. Of the 30 state championships offered last season by the high school association, 17 were won by private schools.
